Our Story

James Butler "Bud" Shankey, the son of John F. Shankey and Anastasia Burke had been listed in the 1930 Federal Census as an undertaker and embalmer in the family-owned funeral home. In 1946, he branched out  and  opened his own establishment as Shankey Funeral Home in Pearl River.

The first funeral to take place at this new site was conducted on December 26, 1946. In 1954, Mr. Shankey built a new funeral home and moved to the new building at 34 North Summit St., Pearl River where it is at the present time. The old location across the street was transferred to St. Margaret's Church.

Mr. Shankey sold the business in 1965 to Robert Teitz who also owned the Hugh E. White Funeral Homes in Nyack and Congers.

Mr Teitz sold the business to Peter Assumma in 1981 and Peter continued to operate the business on his own under the name of Assumma - Shankey Funeral Home.

Peter had a long time friendship with Joseph W. Sorce the owner of the Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home Inc. in West Nyack NY, and his son Joseph P. Sorce over the years. When Peter decided to sell the business in 2017 he contacted Joseph P. Sorce as he wanted his family run business to be carried on by a highly respected and family owned funeral home. In August of 2018 Joseph P. Sorce and Melissa Sorce- DeNicola purchased the funeral home from Peter.
