Obituary of William Van Slyck

William J. Van Slyck of Pearl River NY passed away on Tuesday August 28, 2018 after 93 yrars of his family oriented life.

A life, we believe he would not have changed due to the joy of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family brought to him.  His greatest love was reserved for his wife, Bridie, who predeceased him on Christmas day 2015.  His lifelong devotion to God was unwayvering.

William (Bill) was born in the Bronx into the loving arms of his mother, Mary and father William.  He was the first of 4 children (Mary, Frank, and Helen).  Bill served his country during WWII as a tank driver for the 746th Tank Battalion.  He was a Purple Heart recipient among other commendations from the Army.  Upon his return home he went to work for Con Edison.  His 41 year career saw him as an auto mechanic and welder.  He finished work in Westchester gas operations in 1986.

The story of Bill's life is in his unconditional love for Bridie.  As he welded the furnaces that provided electric power to NYC we cannot help but liken this to their lfe together.  Bridie was the fire in the furnace but Bill was the furnace.  He gave structure to his family's life and all those around him. As long as Bill was around, you never had troubles alone and if you could not carry the load Bill did.

He will be greatly missed physically but spiritually he will always be there to help us carry the load.

Bill is survived by his  sons William (Teresa) , Peter ( Margaret) James (Erin)  and Daughters Mary Jane (John) Begley , Denise (Paul) O'Neill, Patricia (James) Rathschmidt and Kimberley Van Slyck. 14 Grandchildren , 11 Great Grandchildren and many neices and nephews.

His wake will be held at the Sorce Assumma & Shankey Funeral Home 34 N. Summit St. Pearl River NY 10965 (845) 735-4849  www.sorceassummashankeyfh.com

on Friday August 31 from 2 to 4pm  and 7 to 9pm.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Margaret of Antioch  Church in Pearl River on Saturday at 10:00am followed by interment at the Frederick W. Loescher Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Brick Church Rd., New Hempstead NY.

In lieu of flowers the family request a donation be made to Arc of Rockland County in the name of Kim Van Slyck and or Jawonio in the name of Alex Van Slyck.
