Obituary of Sheila Gallagan

Sheila Ann Gallagan, 81, of Pearl River, NY passed away on September 30th, 2018.  Sheila was born December 6th, 1936 in Bronx, NY.  She grew up in Rochelle Park, NJ, attending Sacred Heart Grammar School in Rochelle Park and graduated from Hackensack High School in Hackensack, NJ.   She graduated from Dominican College with a BS degree in Business.  She was very proud of this achievement since she accomplished this at age 55.

Sheila is survived by the love of her life, her husband Joseph whom she was married to for 58 years.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and a friend to all.  She was always helping anyone who needed it.  She will be lovingly remembered by her 3 children, Kathleen Tyrrell (John); Claire Andrews (Jim); Monica Monks (Tony) and her 7 grandchildren, Jenna Marie, Brendan Joseph, Grace Lorraine, Benjamin Arden, Audrey Sheila, Hope Rosalyce and Tess Monica and many relatives and friends, including her sister-in-laws Joan Bliss and Mary Jane McCarthy.  She also leaves behind wonderful friends at the Sisters of Christian Doctrine, especially Sister Lorraine.  She was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Sarah McCarthy, her brother Frederick McCarthy and her sister Jane Nixon.

Sheila worked in the electronics industry for 24 years.  She worked at Nicolet and Wavetek, both in Northvale, NJ and Timeplex in Woodcliff Lake, NJ.   She rose through the ranks to be a Supervisor of Engineering Documentation.

Sheila was a devoted Catholic and an active parishioner at St. Margaret’s in Pearl River for 58 years.  She was a Eucharistic Minister for 28 years; a member of St. Margaret’s Altar Rosary Society; a principal and teacher at St. Margaret’s CCD program for 12 years.  She was an Associate member of the Sisters of Christian Doctrine.

She was an active member of the Pearl River Woman’s Club and a member of the RCC Seniors and Pearl River Seniors groups, making lifelong friends.  She took many trips with her husband and friends and especially loved her trip to Ireland.

She shared her athletic talents as a coach and coordinator in the Pearl River Girls Little League for 10 years.  She was also a group leader for the Camp Fire Girls for many years.  Sheila was very athletic and worked out by swimming every day until she was 79.  In her earlier years she won championships in bowling and in diving.  She enjoyed painting beautiful landscapes in her later years.

Sheila loved to cook and bake and was especially known for her delicious Irish Soda bread and her cheesecake, which everyone loved.  She also loved to golf, garden, swim, and read.  But her favorite pastime was spending time with her children and grandchildren, who adored her.

Visitation will be held at Sorce Asumma & Shankey Funeral Home in Pearl River on Wednesday, October 3rd from 7-9 pm, and Thursday, October 4th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Margaret’s Church, Pearl River on Friday, October 5th at 11 am.  Burial will follow at St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Nanuet.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Marydell Faith and Life Center, 640 N. Midland Avenue, Upper Nyack, NY 10960.
