Obituary of Donald G. McMaster

Donald G. McMaster was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn on May 29, 1934 the third child of Allan and Agnes. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Margaret and his brother, Joseph. He lived most of his life in Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish, where he and his “beloved bride” Brigid Sullivan McMaster raised their four daughters, Brigid, Donna, Maura, and Cara. Don was “Poppy” to his devoted grandchildren, William, Caralyn, Brianne, Michael Joseph, Conor, Brandon, Aileen, Cara Terese, Brigid, Erin, and Maeve. Throughout his life he worked hard to provide for his family and to set an example of simple faith and strong values. He proudly served as a member of the Military Police in the US Army. He retired as a supervisor after 35 years with the NYC Department of Sanitation.

The McMaster family extends to include many friends, neighbors and co-workers who enriched Don’s life and will surely provide comfort in the days ahead. He was honored as the Patient of the Year at the Kessler Hospital Gala Dinner, where he was cheered by his family and the devoted staff of Kessler who gave him outstanding care and encouragement after an amputation that never dampened his faith or his spirit. Poppy was a second father and grandfather to many, especially his devoted sons-in-law, Tiger Ciardullo and Eddie Martin, and daughter-in-law, Joan Cavanagh.

During the last 15 years of his life, Poppy shared and enjoyed a very active family life in Pearl River at home with Maura, Tiger, William, Conor, and Aileen. He was also companioned by two remarkable caregivers, Hannah and Diana, to whom Poppy’s family will forever grateful.  Poppy, you will be missed and remembered. Until we meet again!

The family will recieve friends Sunday 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 pm at the Sorce, Assumma & Shankey F. H.  34 N. Summit St. Pearl River, Ny 10965 (845) 735-4849 sorceprfh@yahoo.com
