Obituary of Josephine Roantree

Josephine “Josie” Roantree (nee Gallagher) died peacefully at Nyack Hospital, on November 26, 2019, at age 72.

Josie is survived by her husband William of Highland Mills, New York; her children Rose Anna of Pearl River, New York, and William, of Irvington, New York; her nephew Brian (Carmel) and grandnieces Cara, Stella, and Addison of Yonkers, New York; her brothers and sisters Anna, Tom, Mary, Rose, Eileen, Peggy, and Seamus at home in Ireland, as well as many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins in Ireland, England, Boston, and New York. She is preceded in death by her mother and father Annie and Jim Gallagher of County Leitrim, Ireland, and her brother Sean Gallagher of Dublin, Ireland.

Josie was born on December 24, 1946, in Drumrackin, Aghacashel, County Leitrim, Ireland. She graduated as a registered nurse from City General Hospital, Stoke-on-Trent, England, in 1969, and completed a course in midwifery at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, in 1971. Josie worked as a nurse for over forty years in Ireland and the United States at the Rotunda Hospital (Dublin, Ireland), Temple Street Children’s Hospital (Dublin, Ireland), James Connolly Memorial Hospital (Dublin, Ireland), Arkansas Children’s Hospital (Little Rock, Arkansas), United Hospital (Port Chester, New York), and White Plains Hospital (White Plains, New York).

Josie met her husband William in 1975 and they went on to get married on March 29, 1980. They welcomed their children Rosie and Will and then moved to the United States in 1988. Josie will be remembered as being a mother to all, including friends and extended family, and for instilling the importance of hard work and education into her children.

A wake will be held on Friday, November 29, 2019, from 2 pm to 6 pm, at Sorce Assumma & Shankey Funeral Home in Pearl River, New York.
