Obituary of Austin O'Toole
Austin (Gus) O’Toole of Pearl River, NY passed away peacefully on January 26th, 2020, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born on April 8th, 1931 to Austin and Bridget (O’Malley) O’Toole in Louisburgh County Mayo, Ireland. The 3rd eldest of 7, he emigrated to the United States in 1955, and married his wife, Mary Cannon (Shraugh, Louisburgh County Mayo, Ireland) in the Bronx, NY in 1960. They raised their family and lived in Woodlawn, Bronx NY for 32 years. In 1996, they moved to Pearl River, where they have lived for the past 24 years.
Gus was known for his kind heart, strong work ethic, transparency and devout dedication to his faith, family and friends. He was a woodworking artisan and a member of NYC Local 608 carpenter’s union for 35 years. He embraced his heritage, and always opened his home to extended family and friends.
Gus is survived by his wife Mae and 3 children, John (Mary), Vincent (Loretta), and Marie. He is survived by his 6 grandchildren who he adored: Kimberly, Austin, Christine, Deirdre, Patrick, and Jack. He will also be remembered lovingly by his three brothers Eugene (Irvine CA), Msgr. William (Culver City, CA), Dr. Colm (Wirrall, UK) and his sister Kathleen (Louisburgh, Mayo IE) as well as numerous sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his brother Anthony (Peg San Leandro, CA) and Sister Mary (Claremorris, Mayo IE).
Visiting will be held Thursday, January 30, 2020 from 2 PM to 4 PM and 7 PM to 9 PM at Sorce Assumma & Shankey Funeral Home – 34 North Summit Street, Pearl River, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Friday January 31, 2020 St. Margaret’s of Antioch R.C. Church in Pearl River, NY. Burial will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery.
