Obituary of Thomas F. McDonagh
Thomas F. McDonagh, a 52 year resident of Blauvelt, NY, passed away on April 29. He was 87 years young.
Thomas was born in Manhattan, NY on June 13, 1932 to Patrick and Agnes McDonagh. Born and raised in NYC, he came of age during a time of egg creams and classic cars. He met a young Jeanette Fitsames, who became his sweetheart. After his primary schooling, Thomas served in the Army Corp of Engineers in Korea during the Korean War, service of which he was extremely proud. Upon his return, he entered an automotive technology school, and during this time worked in various jobs including the USPS. Eventually, he would become a Service Director for dealerships in the Chrysler Corporation.
In 1958, Thomas married his sweetheart, Jeanette, and shortly thereafter began his family. He spent his life dedicated to his wife, who developed the chronic illness, Lupus. He cared for her for 22 years before she predeceased him. It was a love that many wish to achieve.
Moving to Blauvelt in 1968, Thomas made a wonderful life for his family that included his wife, three children and his widowed mother-in-law, Loudi. Nothing was more important to him than family. Many summer trips to Wildwood, NJ, seven consecutive summer drives to Disney World, and various other family activities were his happiest memories. He served as a Scout Master, taking his sons and troop camping and canoeing on the Delaware. He was there for his kids at basketball, football and baseball games, dance recitals, and plays. He taught them the value of hardwork, honesty and being a family. Thomas was equally dedicated to his parents and siblings, serving as an anchor and adviser. He was the neighbor that would help anyone in need with car trouble, house repairs, or a driveway full of snow. He loved a good gathering, and his home was the central meeting place for backyard BBQs and holiday celebrations.
Thomas is survived by his son, Stephen and daughter-in-law, MaryAnne, son, William and daughter-in law, Donna, and daughter, Diane and son-in-law, Peter, as well as, his granddaughter, Jenna and her fiancé, Tom, and grandson, Joseph. He is also survived by loving nieces and nephews, Linda, Patricia and Jim, Teresa and Patrick, John and Donna, Michael, James and Debby, Robert, Kenneth and Susie, Richard and Alina, Peter and Ann, and Paul and Diane.
He is predeceased by his wife, Jeanette, sister, Helen and brother-in-law, Roy, sister Agnes and brother-in-law, John, brother, John and sister-in-law Ruth, sister, Marion, and sister-in-law Vicki and brother-in-law Peter.
In light of today’s circumstances, a memorial gathering will be held at some future date.
