Obituary of Joseph T. Mullen



On Friday February 19, 2021 Joseph T. Mullen (86), loving husband of Suzanne Kramer Mullen and father of Bonnie Wolfe, Joseph, Thomas (predeceased), Michael Mullen and Pamela Vinci (Bud) passed away peacefully at home. Joe left behind his 14 loving grandchildren Liz Vega (Walter), Tim Wolfe, Kelly Hirsh (Ryan), Joseph, Margaret, Patrick and Bridget Mullen, Michael McDevitt, Tommy and Robert Mullen, Jenna, Michael, Sarah and Katelyn Vinci and his 3 great-grandchildren Luke, Madison and Maverick.


Joe was born on January 17, 1935 in the Bronx to Beatrice Mulvey and Frank Mullen. Joe is predeceased by his siblings, Margaret Engelke and Frank Mullen, as well as the mother of his 5 children, Barbara Mullen. Joe is formerly of Pearl River. He lived most of his life in Manhattan until his recent move to Edgewater, New Jersey. 


Joe was the top-rated Private Investigator for over six decades working in the worlds of Politics, Hollywood, Society and Government. He was the President of the J.T. Mullen Company Inc. in New York City. Joe’s high-profile clientele positioned him as one of the America’s most esteemed Private Eyes. He began his career at the age of 16 and never retired. Joe helped the families of four United States Presidents, three Prime Ministers and a King. Gossip column writers helped establish his dashing Mickey Spillane image and his renowned reputation. In 1999 he received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor Award. 


Joe loved to share his passion with his family, having them all fingerprinted and licensed as private investigator by their 18th birthday. Joe had a love for boxing, running, poetry, charity and writing. Joe has completed over 100 races, including the New York City Marathon. He had recently completed his life’s passion project by completing his book, “PI Diaries”. Joe was a strong advocate for many child-related charities, and dedicated much of his work to resolving cases of missing children. Joe’s dedication to his wife, his family and his work was unwavering. 


Visitation will be held on Monday, February 22 from 4:00-7:00pm at Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home, 34 N. Summit St, Pearl River, NY. The Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday 10:30am at St. Aedans in Pearl River, NY.
