Obituary of Patrick J. Desmond
Patrick Desmond of Pearl River, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on March 3, 2021.
Born in the Bronx, New York on December 11, 1929, he was the cherished only child of William and Julia (Hurley) Desmond. Pat attended St. Luke’s School and Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx. He graduated from Fordham University with a Bachelor of Arts, and received his Master of Business Administration from New York University. Pat maintained close friendships with many of his classmates, staying in touch with frequent phone calls and reunions.
He was a veteran, serving in the Army for 2 years. After basic training, he was stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany. Whenever possible, Pat embraced the opportunity to travel throughout Europe.
Pat’s career spanned 42 years in various marketing and publishing roles with New York Telephone Company and its related companies, including Western Electric, AT&T and Nynex. He retired out of Verizon in 1993.
Pat met his one and only, Mary Ellen Biggins, at the Jersey Shore. They were married in 1962 and settled in the Bronx before moving to Pearl River in 1965.
A man of faith, Pat dedicated much of his time to the parish of St. Margaret of Antioch in Pearl River, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Parish Council. He volunteered with the Pearl River Ambulance Corps and supported many charities along the way.
Pat is survived by his cherished wife of 58 years, Mary Ellen, and his loving children; William of London, UK, Mary Ellen Leder (Thomas) of Cortlandt Manor, NY and Patricia DeFalco (John) of Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ. His grandchildren, Julia Leder, Meg Leder and Patrick DeFalco will dearly miss their Pops. Pat touched the lives of many, and his loss will be felt by all of his cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family, as well as his many friends. Pat loved the beach and provided the family with fond memories of summer vacations on Long Beach Island. Pat and Mary Ellen shared their love of skiing with their children, nieces and nephews, creating a tradition of family ski vacations which Pat thoroughly enjoyed.
Visitation will take place on Friday, March 12 from 3 PM - 7 PM at the Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home, 34 North Summit Street, Pearl River. The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 13 at 10 AM at St. Margaret of Antioch, 115 West Central Avenue, Pearl River. The Funeral Mass will also be available via livestream. A private family burial will follow at Ascension Cemetery in Airmont.
